The New Nautical

The word nautical tends to conjure images of sailors and striped shirts.  I’m guessing most of us have a classic Saint James in a drawer somewhere.  The trend originally traces back to the 19th century when Queen Victoria had a sailor suit made for her son.  What began primarily as a style for children, soon became all the rage with society ladies.  Everyone wanted in.

The trend gained widespread momentum in the early 1900s when Coco Chanel made her mark in more casual, wearable nautical styles.  Without question, one of the most enduring trends out there, it’s actually surprisingly easy to pull off.  From asymmetrical hems to one shouldered tops, this season, the pieces are more elevated and modern.  Here are a few of my favorite finds.
