“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will,” Mahatma Gandhi. A fitting quote when it comes to today’s trainer for Never Miss a Monday. Jeffrey Thayer, or JT, from JT Personal Fitness has been training clients in the Hamptons for over 20 years. Originally from Bridgehampton, he is based in Water Mill, and his focus is on strengthening everyone who walks through the door.
Most everybody needs to be stronger, JT tells me. His work is mostly one on one, but he does offer some small group classes as well. He works on stretching and strengthening with clients ranging from performance athletes to High School and Middle School kids, with the majority being people focused on general fitness. Interestingly, he tells me a lot of his business now is coming from parents bringing their daughters in for conditioning to try and garner college scholarships.
JT always varies the workouts so you never get bored. He describes his style as tough enough to push you into the best shape of your life, without ever being competitive. He has at least a dozen clients that he’s trained for over 10 years, and one he’s been working with for 21 years. Talk about continuity!
‘No one is ever sorry they worked out.’
Thayer went to school for physical therapy. When he ran out of money, he started training. He’s since achieved nearly every personal training certification including ACE, specialized golf and tennis instruction, martial arts and boxing, with a 4th degree black belt in San Lung Tao. (So you probably shouldn’t try and fight him.) JT tells me his achilles heel are his wife’s barbecue ribs and Tate’s chocolate chip cookies.
I asked for a couple of quick tips, to lean out while you shape up:
Do interval training
Keep a food diary
Don’t hide snacks (is chocolate a snack?)
Avoid empty calories (he said alcohol, I think he meant this one for after summer)
